Frozen embryo replacement (FER)

Frozen embryo replacement involves monitoring the natural ovulation cycle using ultrasound scans. After ovulation takes place, the frozen embryos are thawed and transferred back into the womb at the right time. For women who have an irregular cycle, hormone replacement therapy or HRT is often recommended as it can prepare the uterus lining for embryo transfer.

Before the embryo storage process begins, we will ask you to sign relevant consent forms. The standard period that you can store your embryos for is ten years. Please note that not all embryos will survive the freezing and thawing process. The consent forms also allow you to donate your embryos to another person’s fertility treatment or for research purposes, should you wish to do so.

Frozen embryo replacement costs significantly less than a normal IVF/ICSI cycle as no egg collection or fertilisation is necessary. However, due to the freezing and thawing process, the chances of conception are less than those with a fresh embryo. There is no known evidence to suggest an increased risk to babies born from frozen embryos.
