There is a growing interest in natural medicine and with this, the ancient healing practice of reflexology is seeing a revival. Some couples and individuals like to utilise this complementary therapy before and during IVF for extra support.
Reflexology, also called zone therapy, is often referred to as a complementary treatment because it falls outside of mainstream healthcare.
Rooted in Egyptian and Chinese traditions, the goal of reflexology is to optimise the body’s natural balance by unblocking the energy pathways to help the body heal itself.
What is involved in reflexology? This non-invasive treatment is safe for individuals and couples who are trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment. It involves a combination of pressure and stimulation of specific areas in the feet and hands to increase blood flow. Practitioners assert that these points on the feet and hands correlate to other areas in the body, such as the ovaries, uterus, and testicles.
Reflexology promotes a sense of relaxation and is a chance to escape from the stress and worries associated with conception.
Although there is no research to support a direct link between reflexology and better fertility, anecdotal evidence suggests individuals feel like it was beneficial.
Reflexology cannot correct physical conditions such as abnormalities with fallopian tubes, but it can certainly be used as a tool to help individuals get better sleep, stress relief, and to feel more positive and relaxed.
Whilst there isn’t a direct connection between stress and poor fertility, we do know that cortisol, the stress hormone, can have an indirect impact on the balance of hormones related to the reproductive system. Reflexology can be used as part of a holistic approach to stress management as part of your fertility treatment.
